Peking University Health Science Center is the medical school of Peking University, which has 14 affiliated hospitals in Beijing, China. It was formerly the independent Beijing Medical University. It was first established in 1902 as the Medical branch of Imperial College of Peking (later on became Peking University). It was discontinued due to government funding in 1908 and reopened on October 26, 1912, after the Qing dynasty conceded to the Republic of China in the same area in the city of Beijing. It was the first of its kind in China to teach western medicine and train medical doctors following the British medical education system. The professional degree offered to the Clinical medicine graduates is equivalent to the Scottish system 'MD'. In 1923, it adopted the name Beijing Medical University. It was separated from Peking University in 1952. In 1954, Beijing Medical University was listed by the State Council as one of the Top-Six National Key Universities.
