Vrchlabí (Czech pronunciation: [ˈvr̩xlabiː]; German: Hohenelbe, Latin: Albipolis) is a town in Trutnov District in the Hradec Králové Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 12,000 inhabitants. It lies at the foot of the Giant Mountains on the river Elbe. The town centre with the castle complex, monastery complex and town park is well preserved and is protected by law as an urban monument zone. Vrchlabí is made up of town parts of Vrchlabí, Hořejší Vrchlabí and Podhůří. The name of the town is closely related with the location on the river Elbe, the oldest name is Latin Albipolis (Albi = Elbe, polis = city).
