The ULMA Group is a business group made up of nine cooperatives that operate in diverse sectors: ULMA Greenhouses, ULMA Architectural Solutions, ULMA Maintenance Services, ULMA Conveyor Components, ULMA Embedded Solutions, ULMA Handling Systems, ULMA Construction, ULMA Packaging and ULMA Advanced Forged Solutions. The group currently has a presence in 81 countries and is one of the largest business groups in northern Spain. The origins of ULMA date back to 1957. That year, six young mechanics set up their first workshop to offer auxiliary services to the region's chocolate industry. They were Pedro Ugarte, Isidro Mendiola, Ignacio Maiztegi, Julián Ayastu, and the brothers Esteban and Julián Lizarralde. When they established their first cooperative, on September 8, 1961, they used the first letter of each of their last names to give the company its name and thus Cooperativa Industrial Talleres ULMA S.C.I. Before creating it, the six workers had met several times with José María Arizmendiarrieta, parish priest of Mondragón (Gipuzkoa) and promoter of what is known today as the Mondragon cooperative experience. Initially, the cooperative was dedicated to manufacturing wrapping machines for chocolates, thus starting what is known today as 'ULMA Packaging'. But very soon it entered the construction sector, another of its current pillars.
