Among the key figures in this context were Thea and Carl Sternheim, the sugar manufacturer Adolf Rothermundt, the banker Paul von Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, the art patron and diplomat Harry Graf Kessler and the artist couple Maria Slavona and Willy Gretor. Many dealers, such as Alfred Flechtheim and Paul Cassirer, likewise bought works by Van Gogh.
