One of the daughters had married a brahmin, and the family was anxious to live up to the high connection. They didn't want Cheddi to sleep on a bed in their house. They required him to sleep on the floor, because the Jagans were of the kurmi caste, a caste of cultivators. Chhedi Jagan says in his book that he had heard about caste problems only from his mother. But, in fact, as a caste, the kurmis are interesting.
