The Leavitt family were Americans by descent, their ancestor Jeremiah Leavitt having been a farmer born at Exeter, New Hampshire. The family later removed to Hatley, Quebec, a few kilometres from the U.S. border, then subsequently to Utah. Their English immigrant ancestor was Puritan John Leavitt of Hingham, Massachusetts, founding deacon of Old Ship Church, the oldest church in America in continuous use and the only remaining seventeenth-century Puritan meeting house in New England. Dudley Leavitt, an early patriarch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was from the same family.[1] Former United States Secretary of Health and Human Services Mike Leavitt is also a descendant of these early Latter-day Saint Leavitts from Hatley.
