- 英訳では "Papey Breeches"[8]。パープエイ島は、富豪が多いとの評判があることから、と説明される[5][8]。
- 「股引」も歴史をたどればある意味「ホーズ」に由来する。「股引」の元祖は南蛮伝来の「カルサン」という衣服であるとされる[14]。「カルサン」はポルトガル語のcalçãoに拠るものであるが、これは接尾辞-ãoをつけた指大辞であり、すなわち直訳で「大きなホーズ」を意味している。すなわちその語根部はポルトガル語calçasであり、スペイン語のcalzasやフランス語のショース(chausse)と同根語で「ホーズ」の意味である。
- マウラーの解説では、"Teufelhosen" "Geldhosen"などと訳されているが[15]、現代ドイツ語ではHoseは「ズボン」の意味なので、これは予想に反しない。ただし、そもそも中期高地ドイツ語では「ホーズ（Beinlinge）」を意味した[16]。
- アイランド語の原文"Þeir, sem vildu afla sèr penínga, sem aldrei væri þrot nè endir á"はあらかたこういう意味だが、マウアーはドイツ語の成句"in Hülle und Fülle（「潤沢」の意）をもちいる[15]。 パウエルとマグヌースソン共訳はいささかくどく長文気味に"When a man wishes to get riches, at once vast and inexhaustible, and always waxing during his lifetime, he must.. [obtain] the so-called Devil's pair of drawers; also called .."と説明する[5]。 シンプソン訳は"money that would never fail them"と端的である[8]。

- Justin Foster氏は、別の写本で"Ginnhringur"と添え書きが読める上と同一の呪符の画像を掲載する。"Ginnhringur"は（おそらくアイスランド語ginningから）"Ring of Allurement"と訳せるとする。似た名のものに ginnir の符があるが、好きな相手を魅惑させるものだとしている。さらに別の異本では"Ginningahringur"と読め、そちらによれば他人を言いなりに指示できる符であるという[21]。
