The Abissa (or Abyssa) is a traditional festival of the Nzema people that celebrates the new year. It takes place in the towns of Grand-Bassam, Tiapoum, and the villages of Nouamou, N'guiémé, and Eboinda in Ivory Coast. The festival occurs between October and November. The Abissa festival has existed since the 1800s. Originally, Abissa was known as "Koudoum", which consisted of performing mystical sacrifices.
