It provided consumer and business banking services to communities throughout Florida. It was founded in 1952 and had 78 branch locations in Broward, Martin, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, and St. Lucie counties. It was a member of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Prior to its acquisition, in June 2011, BankAtlantic had assets of $3.86 billion with liabilities of $3.84 billion.
