Belfaux (French: ; Arpitan: Bélfox, locally Bifou [biˈfu] (listen)) is a municipality in the district of Sarine in the canton of Fribourg in Switzerland. Its former German name was Gumschen, but this is no longer in use. Belfaux is first mentioned in the 12th century as Bellofago. In 1229 it was mentioned as Bellfozen. The municipality was formerly known by its German name Gumschen, however, that name is no longer used. On 1 January 2016, Belfaux annexed the neighboring municipality of Autafond. Belfaux has an area, as of 2009, of 6.5 square kilometers (2.5 sq mi). Of this area, 3.45 km2 (1.33 sq mi) or 53.4% is used for agricultural purposes, while 2 km2 (0.77 sq mi) or 31.0% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.94 km2 (0.36 sq mi) or 14.6% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.03 km2 (7.4 acres) or 0.5% is either rivers or lakes and 0.01 km2 (2.5 acres) or 0.2% is unproductive land.
