Bernex is a municipality of the Canton of Geneva, Switzerland. Bernex is first mentioned in 1256 as Brenay. In 1793 the municipality of Bernex-Onex-Confignon was created. In 1850, Bernex separated from the other two, to form the municipalities of Bernex and Onex-Confignon. Bernex has an area, as of 2009, of 12.95 square kilometers (5.00 sq mi). Of this area, 7.64 km2 (2.95 sq mi) or 59.0% is used for agricultural purposes, while 2.14 km2 (0.83 sq mi) or 16.5% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 2.76 km2 (1.07 sq mi) or 21.3% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.41 km2 (0.16 sq mi) or 3.2% is either rivers or lakes and 0.02 km2 (4.9 acres) or 0.2% is unproductive land.
