Czaniec [ˈt͡ʂaɲet͡s] is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Porąbka, within Bielsko County, Silesian Voivodeship, in southern Poland. It lies approximately 5 kilometres (3 mi) north-east of Porąbka, 14 km (9 mi) east of Bielsko-Biała, and 48 km (30 mi) south of the regional capital Katowice. The village has a population of 5,536. John Paul II's genealogy hails from here. The village could have existed in the 13th century. Later it belonged to the Duchy of Oświęcim, formed in 1315 in the process of feudal fragmentation of Poland and was ruled by a local branch of Piast dynasty. In 1327 the duchy became a fee of the Kingdom of Bohemia. In 1457 Jan IV of Oświęcim agreed to sell the duchy to the Polish Crown, and in the accompanying document issued on 21 February the village was mentioned as Czanyecz. More information...
