Ellsworth County (county code EW) is a county located in the U.S. state of Kansas. As of the 2020 census, the county population was 6,376. Its county seat and most populous city is Ellsworth. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 723 square miles (1,870 km2), of which 716 square miles (1,850 km2) is land and 7.4 square miles (19 km2) (1.0%) is water. It is intersected by the Smoky Hill River. As of the 2000 census, there were 6,525 people, 2,481 households, and 1,639 families residing in the county. The population density was 9 people per square mile (3.5 people/km2). There were 3,228 housing units at an average density of 4 per square mile (1.5/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 93.67% White, 3.56% Black or African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.86% from other races, and 1.18% from two or more races.
