Luhansk (UK: /luːˈhænsk/, US: /-ˈhɑːn-/; Ukrainian: Луганськ, IPA: (listen)), also known as Lugansk (UK: /-ˈɡæn-/, US: /-ˈɡɑːn-/; Russian: Луганск, IPA: ), is a city in the Donbas region, eastern Ukraine. In Spring of 2014, at the onset of the War in Donbas, Lugansk came under the control of the breakaway Luhansk People's Republic (LPR / LNR). As of 2023 it remains under the control of the LPR, which Russia incorporated into their territory following the 2022 annexation referendums in Russian-occupied Ukraine. As of 2022, the population was estimated to be 397,677 (2022 est.), making Luhansk the 12th-largest city in Ukraine.
