Jonathan Michel Metzl (born December 12, 1964) is an American psychiatrist and author. He is the Frederick B. Rentschler II Professor of Sociology and Psychiatry at Vanderbilt University, where he is also Director of the Center for Medicine, Health, and Society. He is the author of multiple books, including The Protest Psychosis, Prozac on the Couch, Against Health: How Health Became the New Morality, and Dying of Whiteness. Metzl was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri to a Jewish family. His father was a pediatrician and his mother was a psychoanalyst. He has three brothers, two of whom are doctors. He received two bachelor's degrees, one in biology and one in English literature, from the University of Missouri, Kansas City, where he went on to earn his M.D. He then completed his residency in psychiatry at Stanford University, where he also earned a master's degree in poetry.
