PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) (English: Indonesian Railways Company, abbreviated as PT KAI or simply KAI) is the sole operator of public railways in Indonesia. It is completely state-owned and pays track access charges to the government. The headquarters of KAI are located in Bandung, West Java. Kereta Api Indonesia is the latest of a long line of successive state railway companies dating from Dutch colonial days. Exactly on August 27, 1863, the first railway company in Indonesia was founded by forming a private railway company named Nederlandsch-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij (NIS) as the colonial government of Dutch-East Indies gave the concession permit to W. Poolman, Alex Frazer and E.H. Kol as the investors on August 28, 1862 with Samarang-Tanggung (Grobogan) as its maiden route. The first ground breaking was carried out in Kemijen village, Semarang by L.A.J.W. Baron Sloet van de Beele on June 17, 1864 and opened in August 10, 1867. At the first business operation of NIS with their both first operational line namely Batavia (Jakarta) - Buitenzorg (Bogor) and Samarang - Vorstenlanden (Surakarta and Yogyakarta), they faced big loss and even was dragged in danger of bankruptcy. So the colonial government also took initiative to assisted this private railway company by formed state-owned railway company named Staatsspoorwegen on April 6, 1875, and their route stretched from Buitenzorg to Soerabaja. The Dutch colonial government also established Deli Spoorweg Maatschappij in North Sumatra, to transport rubber and tobacco around the Deli area. More information...
