The Korea Ilbo (고려일보; 高麗日報; Russian: Корё ильбо) is a Korean-language newspaper published in Almaty, Kazakhstan for ethnic Koreans living in the Soviet Union. On 1 March 1923 a Korean-language newspaper called Sŏnbong (선봉; lit. "Vanguard") began publication in Vladivostok. After the forced deportation of Koreans in the Soviet Union in the 1930s, the newspaper relocated to Kyzylorda in May 1938 and changed its name to the Lenin Banner (레닌 기치; 레닌旗幟; 러시아어: Ленин кич) and published Soviet messaging. The Lenin Banner was the only Korean-language newspaper to be available throughout the Soviet Union, although On the Path of Lenin (레닌의 길로) was available locally in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. Featured prominently in the paper were themes of multi-ethnic families, internationalist unification and collectivism, and the lives of Soviet Koreans. At the time, it was published six times a week, and had branches in cities with significant Korean populations like Tashkent, Dushanbe, and Bishkek. At one point, 40,000 copies of the paper were printed. More information...
