Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) is a public university in Chicago, Illinois. NEIU serves approximately 9,000 students in the region and is a Hispanic-serving institution. The main campus is located in the community area of North Park with three additional campuses in the metropolitan area. NEIU has one of the longest running free-form community radio stations, WZRD Chicago 88.3 FM. The university traces its history to Chicago Teachers College (now Chicago State University), which as Cook County Normal School was founded in 1867 to train elementary and high school teachers. In 1949, Chicago Teachers College (CTC) established the Chicago Teachers College (North Side) branch. The school relocated to the present site at North Park, Chicago in 1961 and changed its name in 1965 to Illinois Teachers' College: Chicago North when control of CTC passed into the hands of the State of Illinois.
