The company was first incorporated as Benguela, based in Menlo Park, California with a development center in Cape Town, South Africa. It was founded in late 2008 by Chris Pinkham and Willem Van Biljon, who had developed the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2). The company raised a total of $20.75 million in venture funding from Sequoia Capital, Accel Partners and VMware.
