It is intersected by Walnut Creek, a tributary of the Arkansas River, and watered by other streams. As of the census of 2000, there were 3,551 people, 1,548 households, and 1,013 families residing in the county. The population density was 5 people per square mile (1.9 people/km2). There were 1,928 housing units at an average density of 3 per square mile (1.2/km2).
