Schönengrund is a municipality in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden in Switzerland. Schönengrund has an area, as of 2006, of 5.2 km2 (2.0 sq mi). Of this area, 65.5% is used for agricultural purposes, while 30.1% is forested. The rest of the land, (4.4%) is settled. Schönengrund has a population (as of 2008) of 488, of which about 3.4% are foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has decreased at a rate of -0.6%.
