Schongau is a municipality in the district of Hochdorf in the canton of Lucerne in Switzerland. Schongau is located in the Seetal valley. The municipality has an area of 12.5 km2 (4.8 sq mi). Of this area, 70.4% is used for agricultural purposes, while 26.1% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 3.5% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (0.1%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains). In the 1997 land survey, 26.08% of the total land area was forested. Of the agricultural land, 65.41% is used for farming or pastures, while 4.98% is used for orchards or vine crops. Of the settled areas, 2.01% is covered with buildings, 0.08% is industrial, 0.32% is parks or greenbelts and 1.04% is transportation infrastructure.
