It is part of the Springfield, Massachusetts Metropolitan Statistical Area. Southwick was originally inhabited by either the Matitacooke, Mayawaug or Woronoake Native American tribes. Southwick is the southernmost town in western Massachusetts, as a result of the "jog" in the Massachusetts-Connecticut border (see History of Massachusetts: Connecticut border).
