South Yorkshire is a metropolitan county and ceremonial county in the Yorkshire and the Humber region of England. South Yorkshire was created in 1974, largely from the southernmost part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, as a two-tier metropolitan county with four metropolitan boroughs. Its county council was abolished in 1986, and since then councils of the boroughs (Barnsley, City of Doncaster, Rotherham and City of Sheffield) have governed the area. Large parts of South Yorkshire are urban, with the county having a population of 1,402,918 in 2021; the Sheffield Urban Area dominates, with a population of 685,368 in 2011. The largest settlements after Sheffield are Doncaster (113,566) and Rotherham (109,697). The east and west of the county are more rural, with the latter containing part of the Peak District national park. The county borders North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire to the north, the East Riding of Yorkshire to the north-east, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire to the south-east, and Derbyshire to the south and west. It has an area of 1,552 square kilometres (599 sq mi). More information...
