SpiderMonkey is open-source JavaScript and WebAssembly engine by the Mozilla Foundation. It is the first JavaScript engine, written by Brendan Eich at Netscape Communications, and later released as open source and currently maintained by the Mozilla Foundation. It is used in the Firefox web browser. SpiderMonkey was released 1995. It implements the ECMA-262 specification (ECMAScript) and is written in C/C++. The engine has seen various JIT compilers, including TraceMonkey, JägerMonkey, IonMonkey, and WarpMonkey, each with its own unique approach to optimize JavaScript code execution. TraceMonkey was the first JIT compiler for JavaScript, but it became obsolete with the development of JägerMonkey and the SpiderMonkey type inference engine. JägerMonkey was then replaced by IonMonkey, which allowed for traditional compiler optimizations. WarpMonkey later replaced IonMonkey, providing additional optimizations based on data and arguments being processed. OdinMonkey is Mozilla's optimization module for asm.js, a subset of JavaScript. SpiderMonkey is intended to be embedded in applications that provide host environments for JavaScript. More information...
