The Staatstheater Braunschweig is owned by the State of Lower Saxony. The earliest incarnation of the Staatstheater Braunschweig was the Opernhaus am Hagenmarkt in Braunschweig, founded in 1690 by Duke Anthony Ulrich of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel.
