Tangail (Bengali: টাঙ্গাইল, [ʈaŋgail]) is a city of Tangail District in central Bangladesh. The establishment of the Tangail began with 3269 square kilometres of land requisitioned from Mymensingh. Earlier it was a Mahakuma of Mymensingh district. A significant city in Bangladesh, Tangail lies on the bank of the Louhajang River. Many believe the name Tangail originated from the Bengali word tanga, meaning horse cart. Tangail has been a local business center since the early 19th century.
