Törökszentmiklós [tørøksɛntmikloːʃ] is a town in Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok county, in the Northern Great Plain region of central Hungary. It is the third-largest settlement in the county. It covers an area of 185.16 km2 (71 sq mi) and has a population of 23,145 (2002). The settlement was first mentioned (as Zenthmyclos) in charters of King Zsigmond in 1399. In 1552 the castle of Balaszentmiklós fell under the Turkish siege. ("Törok" is Hungarian for "Turkish".) In 1685 it was destroyed. In 1738 the settlement, then known as Török Szent Miklós, became a market town. More information...
