Verkhny Ufaley (Russian: Ве́рхний Уфале́й) is a town in Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia, located on the Ufaley River (a tributary of the Ufa River), 142 kilometers (88 mi) northwest of Chelyabinsk, the administrative center of the oblast. Population: 30,481 (2010 Census); 34,360 (2002 Census); 40,061 (1989 Census). One of the oldest populated places in the Ural region, it was founded in 1761 and was granted town status on April 26, 1940. Within the framework of administrative divisions, it is, together with fourteen rural localities, incorporated as the Town of Verkhny Ufaley—an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts.
