Ostwald (French pronunciation:  (listen); Alsatian: Oschwold) is a commune in the Bas-Rhin department in Grand Est in north-eastern France. The ancient name of Ostwald, Wickersheim, is first attested on a map of the emperor Charles the Fat in 884. In the time of the emperor Frederick I Barbarossa, within the realm of the Holy Roman Empire, the Hohenstaufens built a castle by the Ill River.
