Neighboring districts are (from the north clockwise) Landsberg, Starnberg, Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Ostallgäu. The district is located in the northern foothills of the Alps. The main rivers of the district are the Lech and the Ammer.
