Herodotus in the fifth century B.C. (3.94; cf. 7.78) tells us that the Moschoi and Makrones along with the Tibareni, Mares, and Mossynoikoi were grouped into the nineteenth satrapy of the Persian empire and collectively paid a tribute of three hundred talents.
