But ultimately the source of its style and power is mysterious—it is a film without precedent and without any real equals.

Strange, misty scenes composed of shadows and unrealistic silhouettes suggest the transition to abstraction. (…) The toughness of the grain of the story goes soft and porous toward the end. The conclusion is an uncontestable statement that children, God bless them, will endure.

It is risky to combine horror and humor, and foolhardy to approach them through expressionism.
