The recent newspaper publicity involving Mauna Loa was initiated by the publication, in the May 18 issue of the journal Science, of a several-year-long geophysical study by Dr. Falk Amelung detailing his ideas about what is happening beneath the volcano. The publicity was not initiated by any change in the behavior of Mauna Loa."
