The Davis quarry is on a plain underlain by shallow Americus Limestone (see KGS county maps), which Davis misidentified as marble. It is not unknown to misidentify as marble any limestone, dolomite, or anhydrite mineralised enough to take a polish. Marble is metamorphic; metaphoric rock does not outcrop in Kansas.
