The technique of so-called "marsh meadows" involves constantly submerging crops with a thin layer of water, thus promoting the agricultural recovery of marshes and ponds. These irrigated meadows are characteristic of the lowlands of Lombardy, where the optimization of land productivity through proper water drainage was already widespread.
