The fire burned for seven hours, damaging scores of cables that provide the control room staff their eyes and ears to the two 1.1 million kilowatt reactors. Core cooling systems, pumps, dials and switches were knocked out by the fire. But plant workers found a way to press the auxiliary pumps into service, which kept the reactor cooled and allowed for a safe shutdown of the reactors after about 15 hours.
