Charles Rennie Mackintosh was born on 7 June 1868 at 70 Parson Street, next to the Martyrs' School in the Townhead district of Glasgow. His father, Wiliam McIntosh, married to Margaret Rennie, was a police superintendent, and there were 11 children in the family, living in a flat on the top floor of a three-storey tenement. 1n 1878, a promotion made it possible for the family to move to No 2 Firpark Terrace, Dennistown, further out from the city.
