The 893 date is based on Chen Jinfeng's age of 16 as of 909 (when Wang Shenzhi took her into the palace) as given in her biography in the Spring and Autumn Annals of the Ten Kingdoms; however, she was also described to be a posthumous child (whether biologically his or not) of Chen Yan's, and Chen Yan appeared to have died in 891 — although the traditional account, which indicated that he fell ill in 891 and died shortly after, allowed for the possibility that his death was in 892.
