This progression of offices is per Chen's biography in the Old Book of Tang. His biography in the New Book of Tang gave a different progression – that he served as Zhōngshū Shèrén (中書舍人), a mid-level official at the legislative bureau (中書省, Zhōngshū Shěng); that while he headed Jixian Institute he was also the deputy minister of public works (工部侍郎, Gōngbù Shìláng); and that he then served as Ménxià Shìláng (門下侍郎), the deputy head of the examination bureau (門下省, Ménxià Shěng).
