the correspondence was believed to be authentic during late antiquity and the Middle Ages: it thus ranged from the testimony of Saint Jerome (who in 392 wrote that the letters between the two great men circulated and were read by many people) to that of intellectuals such as Albertino Mussato and Boccaccio, who had no doubts both about the authenticity and the Christian faith of Seneca.
