Kaori Yuki has outdone herself in the finale of the Gothic horror Godchild.
Graphiquement, en revanche, on sent tout de suite combien le dessin de Kaori Yuki a évolué et s'est amélioré depuis Comte Cain. (translation: With the illustrations, however, one senses immediately how the art of Kaori Yuki has evolved and improved since Count Cain [The Cain Saga].)
Zu ihren größten visuellen Einflüssen zählen Werke wie "Legend of Billy Jean", "Gothic", "Lost Boys", "Aliens", aber auch "Torch-song Trilogy" und die "Rocky Horror Picture Show", aus der sie den Namen des Butlers Riff für Count Cain entlieh.
Each of the first four tales (which are much longer than the concluding story, the darkly comic revenge tidbit, "The Death of Cleo Dreyfus") features multiple passages in which the narrative is garbled because of back story or confusing characters.
In all, it was an excellent conclusion...I guess this ambiguity isn't bad, as it leaves Cain's fate up to the reader, but I would have preferred a little more concrete of an answer.
The final volume is loaded with twists and turns. However, despite the extra eight pages, the final scenes become rushed trying to explain who is who and what was really going on behind the scenes.
Le trait de la mangaka est bien loin de la poésie, même maladroite... les représentants de la gente masculine se ressemblent tous plus ou moins, et les expressions sont communes à un certain nombre de visages. Les femmes, elles, sont plus facilement identifiables... (translation: The line drawing of the manga-ka is far from poetry, even clumsy... the representatives of the masculine gender all resemble each other more or less, and the expressions are common to a certain number of faces. The women, they, are more easily identifiable...)
Malheureusement, donc, l'univers de God Child pourra avoir du mal à séduire les plus pragmatiques (qui se lasseront de la dimension mystique), surtout que le premier tome ne fait que poser les bases sans développer de véritable intrigue. (translation: Unfortunately, the universe of Godchild will not charm the very pragmatic (who will tire of the mystical dimension), especially as the first volume lays down the bases without developing true intrigue.)
D'ailleurs on remarque fortement la différence de trait entre les premiers Comte Cain et God Child. (translation: One remarks strongly on the difference of the line drawing between the first Count Cain [The Cain Saga] and Godchild.)
Un excellent premier tome, à se procurer immediatement si vous aimez les histoires sombres. (translation: An excellent first volume, to obtain immediately if you love dark stories.)
While many character designs do follow certain shojo conventions, it's far more elaborate than the average series, comparable to the level of detail and emotive expressions in Death Note.
Yuki's artwork is gothic, shadowed, and full of rich period detail, and her character designs, full of sleepy-eyed pretty boys and Victorian beauties showing off their hourglass figures, are perfect for setting the mood.

I found the characters' behavior too cruel and stomach-churning to be moving but not ridiculous enough to be campy fun... I found Jizabel's backstory just too much for me–I really have a hard time with animal cruelty (even when it's implied), so I'm sure that's influencing my score for this volume.
