Torenbeek studierte von 1956 bis 1961 Aeronautical Engineering an der Delft University in den Niederlanden. Im Anschluss machte er einen „Guided Missiles Course" am College of Aeronautics in Cranfield, England, bevor er 1962 für zwei Jahre in den Militärdienst ging.
1977 nahm er sich ein Sabbatjahr, das er als Consultant am Advanced System Department von Lockheed Georgia in den USA verbrachte.
1980 bekam er eine Vollprofessur in Delft für das Fachgebiet „Aircraft Design", das damit erstmals zu einem Kernfach in der luftfahrttechnischen Ausbildung aufstieg.
Darüber hinaus war er Mitbegründer des European Workshop on Aircraft Design Education (EWADE).
