The 23 November 1996, hijack of an Ethiopian Airlines 767 resulted in the death of 128 people when the pilots were forced to ditch the aircraft near the Comoros Islands.
Some unknown number of passengers who missed or ignored pleas to leave their life vests deflated are also believed to have drowned inside the cabin, unable to swim down to the upturned exit doors because their inflated life vests pinned them to the floor, which was now the ceiling.
