It was highly common in 1806 and 1809 for black woman to use their hair and curl it or put it into a style such as finger waves to create a thinner layer on the scalp when working in the fields. Finger waves are commonly mistaken to be created by Sir Hiram Maxim. Finger waves started to become heavily popularized by white woman including Helen Kane and Bette Davis .
