Womp Stomp Films (Vincente DiSanti): While everyone worked out their deals with their agents, I was officially hired onto [Free Birds] and basically became the conduit for all communication coming out of the Santa Monica office where the story was being developed. I even voiced Woody Harrelson's character in scratch for about two years. I did end up getting 2 voices in the film. The old woman who tells the fat kid to shut up and Mr. Anchovy. Both lines were one take I did in scratch edit as a quick "let's get something in" and it ended up in the film. There was no dialogue, I just made both lines up.

Womp Stomp Films (Vincente DiSanti): The BIGGEST mistake of [Free Birds] was cutting a character by the name of BUCK MCDONALD. This character was played by Luke Wilson and was by far the funniest character in the film. He was supposed to be the first man to ever time travel, but got one-upped by the Turkeys. His story was the B-Plot, cutting back to the future to see "the butterball effect" take place every time the turkeys changed something in the past. Buck took it upon himself to start time traveling in one of the prototype time travel pods to stop them, but he kept popping up in the wrong time periods and causing even more damage. Luke and I were sent off at one point to write a bunch of gags and a lot of the were boarded and cut. Buck was so funny, the higher-ups felt he took too much attention away from Reggie and Jake (Which used to be Reggie and Brock). Buck was so popular, the LLC used to cut checks for people on the film was called Buck McDonald Productions. I still have a highlight reel of all the Buck scenes somewhere. The terminator pig was HILARIOUS. After the turkeys successfully took themselves off the menu, we flashed forward to the future to see a world where PIGS become the #1 holiday meal. After all, the need for pepperoni and sausage pizza was in high demand! The pigs started a revolution and sent back a 1 foot tall terminator pig to fix the time stream and he caused a ton of chaos. I still have the original storyboards that were hand drawn by David Feiss. In fact, I still have hard drives and hard copies of a lot of the original artwork that I saved from being tossed in the dumpster.

Womp Stomp Films (Vincente DiSanti): I was the literally the first official hire on the film and was on it for about 3 years as the Director's Assistant, Story Coordinator, and Editorial Coordinator. Yes, usually those jobs are split up into about 6-8 people, but I did all three. Reel FX did not come up with the idea. They bought it from John Strauss and David Stern, the original writers. I worked with them, Ash [Brannon], and Luke Wilson to craft the original outline that was greenlit for production.

Womp Stomp Films (Vincente DiSanti): I would just like to add that both Ash [Brannon] and Jimmy [Hayward] did everything in their power to make [Free Birds] work, but Reel FX could not get out of their own way to just let the creatives do what they do best. Ryan Kavanaugh was the one who called for Ash to be fired because he didn't want "another Surf's Up." He had partnered with RFX's owner early on as a distributor and made them jump through hoops for a distribution deal. During one of our pitches at AMF, Ryan kept introducing Owen [Wilson] as the voice of Buzz Lightyear instead of Lightning McQueen.

Most of the film's score was to incorporate Americana Banjo Music. Steve recorded several demos, even one with Leonard Nimoy singing back up vocals. I still have the music and all of the old reels on a hard drive somewhere around here. Steve left the project when it went from a straight comedy to a sci-fi epic.
