In a letter to Mr. Harshe, supplementing that containing his resignation, Mr. Stevens said: "I am writing to make quite clear my position with regard to the theater's policy for next year. I am sorry if this is a disappointment to you and to Mr. Goodman, but I feel I am hopelessly in disagreement with the theater committee. I believe that the Goodman should be a true art theater, and that it should devote itself to really important plays, not otherwise to be seen in Chicago, and to new plays with some emphasis on vital experiment...."
