Dufferin Medals were the forerunner to Governor General's Awards. They were introduced in 1874 by the Earl of Dufferin, Canada's third Governor-General who served from 1872 to 1878, as an award to students for academic or athletic excellence ("The Dufferin Medal," by Stuart P.
