Czar Peter I supported Yefim Nikonov's proposal for a submarine armed with rocket missiles, leading to the completion of a prototype in June 1720. Its trials were sufficiently successful to support orders for further boats, but problems with their leaking, and the death of Peter in January 1725, led to the project's abandonment.
