Corporal Issy Smith, the Jewish V.C., who is being treated in the Dublin University V.A.D. Auxiliary Hospital, Mountjoy square, for gas posioning, had a busy time last evening.

Issy Smith, VC died on 10 September 1940 and was buried with full military honours in the Fawkner Cemetery. The Memorial Service was held on his 70th Yahrtzeit and many of his family members attended including his son Maurice who lives in NSW.

1. Army Reserve This was a pool of men who had already completed a [period of active service within a] term of service with the regular army. It was organised into three Sections: Section A Reserve, Section B Reserve, Section D Reserve. The Army Reservists were mobilised in early August 1914.
Imperial reservists are being enrolled at the Barracks, and tents have been erected in the barrack yard for the accommodation of some of the men who have passed the medical examination.
Four days after the declaration of war he reported as a British reservist at Broadmeadows Camp, and after getting to England with the A.I.F. [first contingent sent to Egypt] was transferred to a Manchester company. During his war service he was wounded four times, and gassed more than once.
